GFCI End of Life

GFCI End of Life is defined by UL as when a GFCI is incapable of providing ground-fault protection and passing its internal test function. Unlike competitors, Leviton circuit breakers with GFCI technology deny the user the ability to reset once the GFCI reaches end of life. By cutting the flow of power, which is now unprotected, they provide the most complete protection against electrical shock.

To meet the requirements of the UL Standard, seven critical components of the GFCI are tested. But did you know that until very recently, circuit breakers with GFCI technology were exempt if two of the seven components failed?

These exceptions for the two components make it possible to reset and turn ON certain GFCI circuit breakers, allowing them to continue to provide unprotected power without alerting the end user.

This gap in protection, and in homeowner safety, is why Leviton designed our circuit breakers with GFCI technology to deny power if any of the seven components failed. This provides more complete protection – no exceptions.

But that’s not all. Leviton successfully submitted a proposal to UL requesting their Standard be updated to mandate that ALL circuit breakers with GFCI technology meet the same End of Life safety requirements. But even though the UL Standard has been revised, manufacturers are still given over three years to improve their design to conform.
