Deciphering 2018 IECC—Occupancy Sensors and Open Office Requirements

Occupancy sensors are energy code standbys, and with the revision of IECC for 2018, they are now required in more spaces. Break rooms, enclosed offices, open plan office areas, and warehouse storage areas have now been added to the required applications list. In addition, the occupancy sensor auto-OFF time has been reduced from 2015’s 30 minutes to 20 minutes in 2018.

One of the most significant changes in the 2018 IECC energy standard update is the addition of Section C405.2.1.3, Open Plan Office Control. The section uniquely calls out a specific application control for open offices based on the size of the space.

Summary of 2015 and 2018 IECC Requirements

C405.2.1 Occupant Sensor Controls and C405.2.1.3 Open Plan Office Areas

As you can see, 2018 IECC takes strong measures to ensure that lighting is not wasted in large workspaces, which often contain empty cubicles or are only partially occupied much of the time. By dividing lighting into specific zones, businesses meet requirements by only providing lighting to occupants that are present—satisfying 2018 IECC while simultaneously saving costs and energy. This revision shows the goals of reduction and sustainability in action when applied to a very common real-world scenario.
